Autumn/Winter 2013 Makeup Trends

It is still sizzling hot in Europe but it won't be long before we are shivering in our coats and cursing the rain, so it's a good time to look ahead to what the makeup trends are for the coming seasons. If you are based in the southern hemisphere you can rock these looks now and be ahead of the curve!

While I love looking at highly creative work, I am always thinking about how I can relate the look into my every day life. Just because someone decides to send a crazy embellished eyebrow down the runway (thank you Chanel!), doesn't mean I will have the time or the desire to recreate this for myself.

So in the interest of keeping things simple, here are the most wearable and fool proof trends.

The eye trend that I love is a smoky eye using jewel tones such as burgundy or purple. If the thought of reaching for a burgundy eyeshadow freaks you out a little, then at J.Mendel, Gucci Westman (using Revlon) did a version of this look using a copper coloured shadow which is an amazingly flattering colour that anyone can pull off.

In terms of eyeliner, graphic shapes were still there and the winged cats-eye shape still dominates. My favourite for a subtle rendition of this could be seen at Zac Posen by Kabuki using MAC.

Just a little side note, I recently discovered the Skinny Eyeko pens which are much more user friendly to recreate this look than gel-liner and a brush. You can buy them for £10.00 here in the UK with free international shipping.

Lips were a mix between a nude shade and these amazingly rich vampy reds. Where the eyes were smoky and the main feature, the lips were natural and nude. This could be seen in NY at Jason Wu and at Donna Karan.

In looks where the eyes were kept simple with winged liner, vampy lips made an appearance - Zac Posen and Dolce & Gabbana were masters of this. I am thrilled to see this trend back this winter and I'm pulling out my Tom Ford Black Orchid lipstick immediately.

Overall, complexions were much more matte and less dewy than we have seen in recent times, so it is time to reach for the powder and give it a liberal dusting over your foundation.
